Musical Comedy Hit ‘Hairspray’ @ LEC Friday Feb 27

It’s time to let your hair down and dance the night away! HAIRSPRAY, Broadway’s musical comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture is coming to the Laredo Entertainment Center on Friday, February 27! This fantastically fun musical, winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards including Best Musical, is currently enjoying its 5th year on Broadway. The 2007 West End production of HAIRSPRAY was nominated for a record-breaking 11 Oliver Awards and nabbed four, including the top category Best New Musical, and also won Best New Musical in all of Britain’s other top awards programs, including the Evening Standard, Critic’s Circle, and Whatsonstage Awards.  And now, the people of Laredo will be swept away to 1960s Baltimore in this international smash-hit musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter and romance – and enough deliriously tuneful songs to fill a nonstop platter party. It’s HAIRSPRAY, live on stage, in living color

In HAIRSPRAY it’s 1962 the ’50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her ‘do? Only in HAIRSPRAY! Welcome to the ’60s!  HAIRSPRAY is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, who served as a creative consultant on the musical comedy. It features a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. HAIRSPRAY features an original score by Academy Award-nominated Marc Shaiman (who co-wrote the music and lyrics for the acclaimed animated musical, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. This production of HAIRSPRAY is based on Jack O’Brien’s original direction and Jerry Mitchell’s original choreography, recreated by Matt Lenz and Danny James Austin, respectively. Scenic design is by David Rockwell; the set coordinator is Michael Allen; costume design is by William Ivey Long; lighting design is by Kenneth Posner and Paul Miller; the sound is by Shannon Slaton; wig and hair design is by Paul Huntley; and the musical supervisor is Lon Hoyt. HAIRSPRAY is produced by NETworks Presentations.  HAIRSPRAY will play Friday, February 27 at 8:00 pm, at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Tickets are $42-$57 and may be purchased by calling (956) 712.1566, online at Ticketmaster.com or at the Laredo Entertainment Center Box Office. The HAIRSPRAY web site can be found at www.hairsprayontour.com

Everyone is raving about this delightful musical, including the critics:

A great big fat gorgeous hit, claims Clive Barnes of the New York Post.

A must-see for every teenage dreamer who believes anything is possible, say Georgina Brown of London’s The Mail on Sunday

So many numbers bring down the house, it’s a wonder the theater is still standing, says Jeremy Gerard of New York Magazine

This Saturday 14th Annual Crime Stoppers Menudo Bowl

January 27, 2009 by marifer

Hey Laredo ready for some delicious Menudo? Well don’t make plans!! This great event is set to kick off Saturday, Jan 31 @ LIFE Downs, off U.S. 59 and it is sponsored by KGNS-TV, CW Laredo, Telemundo and Ashley Furniture HomeStore; a Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol and Air Marines exhibit on air boats, helicopters and ATVs; and the Crime Stoppers’ pottery and chimeneas sale in the Exhibit Barn.

The already popular Menudo Bowl was established in 1996 to provide family-oriented entertainment and raise much-needed funds for the organization, which benefits the community by giving citizens an avenue to assist area law enforcement through calls to the anonymous TIPS Hotline.

Last year, more than 8,000 people attended the event. The Laredo Crime Stoppers continues to provide the area with fun, family entertainment food booths, children’s games and rides, a motorcycle show, cattle roping in the Rodeo Arena and live music. Additions this year include a trail ride by the Brush Country Trail Riders; a Chinese martial arts exhibition by Panfeilei Gung Fu Institute and “America’s Next Top Model” casting call.

Garza Entertainment and the LEC are proud to present: Valentine’s Day Reggaeton Concert with Rakim & Ken-Y Saturday February 14 @ 8pm

The Laredo Entertainment Center and Garza Entertainment are proud to announce the sweetest concert of the year, Reggaeton Superstars Rakim & Ken-Y will romance a Laredo audience on Valentine’s Day February 14, 2009 starting at 8pm.  The popular duo will perform at the LEC to an anticipated crowd of more than 5,000 screaming fans. Ticket prices are: $62, $42, $32, and $17 (plus facility fee).
“Rakim, also known as R.K.M., is José Nieves. Ken-Y is short for Kenny Vásquez; both born and raised in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. The two joined forces in 2004 to form the reggaeton duo RKM & Ken-Y. A few short years after their formation, the pair climbed the ranks to reggaeton stardom, arriving in 2006 as one of the genre’s most important groups. The pair got their start performing at local house parties and clubs, Ken-Y singing and RKM providing the group’s lyrics and rap flow. Notice by record producer Chencho led to their first recording contract with Money Machine Records. Appearing on mixtapes and compilations, the duo caught the attention of Pina Records. The label switch to Pina Records proved very important in the group’s success, offering opportunities to work with artists like Don Omar. Their debut record, Masterpiece met great success and positive reviews. Nieves and Vasquez credit the success to their unique philosophy, “Our mission is to use our music to reach all kinds of people: young kids, adolescents, adults, rappers, Christians — everybody — and bring reggaeton into areas of the world where it’s never been before.” ~ All Music Guide

Free Park & Ride for this Saturday’s Jamboozie‏

January 24, 2009 by tigre

Laredo Texas- If you are one of the thousands who worries about parking availability for the UETA Jamboozie Festival, then fret no more, since the City of Laredo’s El Metro will be providing free park and ride for Jamboozie.See attached map.El Metro will have a total of two trolleys and one bus driving the route, starting at 4:00 p.m.  The shuttle is free and will continue until 1:00 a.m.  Attendees can expect the El Metro shuttle service about every 15 minutes.  The shuttle service is absolutely free for Jamboozie attendees; it will not make any other unscheduled detours or stops.  There will be no food or drinks allowed on the trolleys or the bus.

Attendees to Jamboozie can park at the City of Laredo’s parking lot, located down below the El Portal Center Mall, on Santa Maria Street and Pedregal.  There is a few of $1 an hour, or $8 a day, but this is secure parking with a parking attendant on site.  Next to this lot is the El Portal Center mall parking, which is free; however,  all parking is at owner’s own risk.  The City of Laredo is not responsible for the vehicle or personal property left either in or on the vehicle, and assumes no liability for fire, theft, vandalism or casualty of the vehicle or personal property left therein.

Attendees can hop on the Park & Ride right before the intersection of Santa Maria and Pedregal – look for the El Metro posted.  The bus will head north and pick up – and eventually – drop-off attendees at the second park & ride pick-up spot, on Ventura Street between South Main Street and Santa Maria, also immediately below the El Portal Center Mall.

From here, the bus will make its way to Jamboozie, dropping off – and eventually – picking up attendees at the festival drop-off spot at Convent and Zaragoza.  From there, Jamboozie is only a few short steps away.

“El Metro is very proud to be able to offer this service to the Laredo citizens, to help support Jamboozie, while generating interest and awareness of Laredo’s downtown, and of course, in our El Metro bus service,” said Feliciano Garcia, director for the City of Laredo’s El Metro.  The City of Laredo’s Traffic Safety Division will also be supporting El Metro’s efforts, by closing streets and dedicating the route for Jamboozie traffic.
