City of Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas will travel to Washington, DC to join more than 250 of the nation’s mayors for the 77th Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in the midst of the historic presidential inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama.  Mayor Salinas will have a very full schedule of meetings over the weekend, but will be returning to Laredo on Inauguration Day due to obligations in the city
“I would love to stay and be part of this historic event.  I have been lucky enough to have had a front row seat to a number of other inaugurations:  First as a member of the DC National Guard Military Police Unit, then as a Capitol Hill Police Officer and finally, as a special agent with the FBI.  Still, I have obligations to the people of Laredo so I will be coming home at the conclusion of the Conference of Mayors,” explained Salinas.
Salinas has been asked by U.S. Conference of Mayors President Miami, FL, Mayor Manny Diaz to serve in a leadership role (Subcommittee Chair) on the Conference of Mayors Homeland Security Committee and as a senior member of the Conference’s Immigration Reform Task Force. Salinas crafted the Conference of Mayor’s policy statement on immigration that was adopted this past summer in Miami. These obligations will keep the mayor in meetings on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
In addition to his leadership obligations, Mayor Salinas will participate in the release of the latest in a series of Ready-to-Go Jobs Reports.  These studies inventory infrastructure projects from cities around the country, including Laredo that could create jobs quickly and improve the basic infrastructure of cities and metropolitan regions with federal investment. Mayor Salinas will also be part of a group of mayors releasing a report that forecasts possible job losses for 2009 by the 363 individual metropolitan economies.
“This study is important to Laredo as the state of metro economies is reflected in the traffic that Laredo sees on our bridges,” Salinas stated.
While Monday is a national holiday, Mayor Salinas will be working.  He is scheduled to meet with Laredo’s congressional delegation, members of President-Elect Obama’s transition team, key Congressional Committee Chairs, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA).  In addition, if the opportunity arises, he will meet with other presenters at the Conference, including former President Bill Clinton; California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger; National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial; T. Boone Pickens; and George Soros of the Open Society Institute.

Salinas will be staying with his daughter as a means to avoid costly hotel bills in Washington.  His current plans have him returning to Laredo on inauguration day due to his obligations as mayor.
