The Laredo Broncos of the United League have re-signed 4 members from their 2008 ballclub.  The 4 players are OF Anthony Bennett, INF/DH Matt Imwalle, SP Dan Sausville, and RP Nathan Crawford.

Bennett was a starter for the 08 team primarily playing left and right field.  He hit .263 on the season with 2 HR’s and 31 RBI.  His biggest asset was his patience at the plate as he drew 54 walks and had an on base percentage of .408 both of which led the team.  Imwalle came over late in the 2008 season but had a big impact with his bat.  In 20 games he hit .300 with 2 HR’s and 15 RBI.  Many of those 15 run batted in came in late game situations that helped the Broncos get some big wins.  Broncos Field Manager Ricardo Cuevas is expecting great things from his hitters, “Anthony Bennett and Matt Imwalle provide 2 big bats to put in our lineup.  They have been in Laredo before, and know what it takes to make this team successful.”

Pitching wise the Broncos got a lot of use out of Sausville.  Sausville one of Laredo’s workhorses went 3-3 last year with a 5.40 ERA in 33 appearances which was the 2nd most on the team.  Sausville will be a starter this year, as he did make 4 starts a year ago.  Nathan Crawford returns for his 2nd year with the Broncos.  Crawford made 18 relief appearances for the Broncos in 2008 and went 0-2, but got out of some big jams late in games.

Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez is happy to have the returning players, “ I was pleased with the way these 4 players contributed with the team last year.  I am looking forward to seeing them do the same again this year.”

The Laredo Broncos begin their 4th season in 2009. The Broncos will play a 80 game season from June to September with 36 home games at Veterans Field.  Season tickets and Sponsorship Packages are on sale in the Laredo Broncos office located at 2200 Santa Maria or can be contacted at 723-BASE (2273)

Filed under HEADLINE, NEWS AND POLITICS

fluAlthough at this time there are no confirmed cases of “Swine” Flu in Laredo, TX, there have been 20 cases of “Swine” Flu confirmed in the U.S. spanning 5 states, one of which is Texas. The CLHD will be issuing information as it becomes available to us. Additionally, we are recommending that the public stay informed with the latest information. Presently, there are no additional precautions or travel restrictions.
The City of Laredo Health Department is taking all the necessary precautions. We have enhanced surveillance monitoring and are continuing to investigate any new cases.
Currently, in both Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico we have not seen any increase in respiratory illnesses nor confirmed any “flu” cases. However, we want to inform the public on normal respiratory precautions and flu symptoms.

Signs & Symptoms:
Fever greater than 101, dry cough, extreme muscle aching, headache and lethargy, lack of appetite. If someone has these symptoms, they should see their physician immediately and report it to the Health Department.

The Health Department is strongly encouraging everyone who has not been vaccinated with their regular flu vaccine to do so. Currently, there is no swine flu vaccine. Additionally, we recommend taking the following precautions recommended by the Center for Disease Control.

  1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  2. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  4. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

People with flu-like symptoms stated above should stay home to avoid infecting colleagues or classmates and parents should try to keep babies and young children away from people who have flu-like illnesses. School children who have “flu” symptoms should be excluded from school until they see their physician and has verified it is not “flu”.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has a flu hotline in place for the general public. The number is 888-777-5320. Additionally, the City of Laredo Health Department has created a Hotline providing information about the “swine” flu. To reach the hotline, please call 956-795-4954 or call 956-795-4951.

Update:

The swine flu hotline phone number for the City of Laredo Health Department has changed.  If anyone has questions, concerns or needs clarification regarding swine flu, symptoms, preventive measures or other issues, please call (956) 795-4921.

“La Mission” sneek peak in San Francisco

Hello Viva Laredo fans, Gina Hughes from Techie Diva here. I am the web designer for Viva Laredo, and part-time contributor to the site.  I just wanted to share with you guys a video I made especially for you. I live in the  San Francisco Bay Area, so I get to attend some really cool events and do interviews with celebrities. This past Thursday I attended the after party for the cast and crew of the movie ” La Mission.” I didn’t get to see the movie premier here in San Francisco, but I got to interview the cast including Benjamin Bratt, Jeremy Valdez, and Erika Alexander. The movie was directed by Peter Bratt (Benjamin’s Brother) and is a movie that was filmed here in the San Francisco Mission district.  “La Mission” won’t be out until September, so mark your calendar, because you won’t want to miss out on this story about an ex-con who has turned his life around and now devotes his himself to his lifelong Mission Boyz friends, building classic lowrider cruisers, and his son who turns out to be gay. This revelation causes Che to lash out at those around him, and he finds himself emotionally broken and isolated, before beginning a hard climb toward understanding and acceptance.
