Local Artist to Hang Art Pieces for Month Long Exhibit

The Laredo Public Library is proud to host an exhibit by Miki Rodriguez, an internationally-acclaimed local artist. Come see her hang the pieces and come get to know this star in our midst as she discusses her inspiration, her art work and her vision. Check out this great exhibition this Thursday May 28,2009 @ 9:30am till 12:00 pm at the Laredo Public Library Lobby.
Rodriguez was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. She is the daughter of Oscar and Gloria Rodriguez and is married to James L. Humphries. She began her education in drawing and painting at the University of Houston where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and went on to receive her Master of Sciences in Art (MS) at Texas A&M University at Kingsville. Finally, she received a fellowship and entered Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.
She has taught art in Laredo for over 25 years. She has educated students at Laredo Independent School District, United Independent School District, Texas A&M International University, Laredo Community College and is presently an instructor at St. Augustine High School.
The work is primarily oil on canvas but occasionally oil paint is applied to paper or panel surfaces. The larger paintings are representational of her style; however, the smaller more intimate paintings are a necessary format which facilitates the artist in her approach to the larger formats.
Her work reflects her environment, experiences, culture, and heritage as a Latina. Additionally, it depicts a close relationship with family and the memories they share. She uses oil paint on canvas and paper with a deep and intense color which also are an expression of home. Her marks vary from strong black lines to a softer, quieter whisper and her imagery, although abstracted, are based on objects that have surrounded her in the past. She wants the viewer to experience her work and remember their own past.
“My work has developed into marks that experiment with social relationships, ancient cultures and personal symbols that reflect my life and surroundings,” said Rodriguez. “They are directly connected to my memories and beliefs. And in this way they have become a part of my identity.”
“I would like the viewer to glimpse their own personal symbols in their lives as they engage with my paintings,” Rodriguez concludes.

I know there are some players in the area, that can come out and give their best and have a shot at making the team.”
Players that are selected at the tryout camp will be invited to spring training and have a chance at making the final roster. The first game of the year will take place on June 11th against the Edinburg Roadrunners.

3rd Annual LEC-South Texas Food Bank Empty Bowls Fundraiser @ LEC
The third annual Laredo Entertainment Center-South Texas Food Bank Empty Bowls fundraiser is set for Aug. 13 (Thursday) at the Laredo Entertainment Center from 5:30 p.m. to 11.
This year’s event, chaired by valued South Texas Food Bank board members Anna Benavides Galo and Kevin Romo, has two added features to compliment the usual silent auction of artwork and autographed bowls. It’s an Empty Bowls-Plus. The plus includes a concert featuring the musical group of the 1980s America and a South Texas Food Bank honoree, Arturo N. Benavides Sr.
Doors will open at 5:30p for cocktails and auction. Dinner will be served from 7p to 8p. The America concert starts at 8p.
“The South Texas Food Bank is again extremely grateful to the Laredo Entertainment Center’s partnership in our mission of feeding Laredo’s hungry,’’ South Texas Food Bank executive director Alfredo Castillo said.
“We thank the LEC and general manager Roy Medina on behalf of the 18,000 families we serve on a monthly basis at no charge to them. The LEC is making a difference in the lives of children, adults and elderly.”
Roy Medina, General Manager for The SMG-managed Laredo Entertainment Center, added, “The Laredo Entertainment Center is pleased to do our part in helping fight hunger in Laredo. We’ve had this commitment for some time.”
Bowls up for bid include ones autographed by national celebrities Robert Duval, Enrique Iglesias, Cheech and Chong, Carlos Mencia, Julietta Venegas, Daddy Yankee and Houston Astros Miguel Tejada, Cecil Cooper and Alex Trevino. Local artist Rosario Azios, a three-time contributor to Empty Bowls, will do artwork on the Iglesias, Venegas and Cheech and Chong bowls. Another local artist, Pancho Farias, has painted the Robert Duval bowl in Duval’s Lonesome Dove character.
The South Texas Food Bank acknowledges Azios’ contribution to Empty Bowls.
“She has been with us since year one and bowls painted by her have earned the food bank thousands of dollars,” South Texas Food Bank Empty Bowls coordinator Gloria Jackson said.
Personal artwork bowls this year include Amado Pena and Cuate Santos originals. Several other local artists have also contributed. The bowls will also soon be on display and up for bids on the South Texas Food Bank website www.southtexasfoodbank.org
Among America’s best-known recordings are A Horse With No Name and Ventura Highway. Concert tickets will be available via Ticketmaster, at the LEC box office and at the South Texas Food Bank, 1907 Freight, 956.726-3120 during business hours. Tickets are $100 per person on the floor tables.
Those include dinner and access to bid on the bowls. Seating is 10 persons per table. Fifty-five tables are available. Tables closer to the stage are priced higher. Concert only stadium tickets are reasonably priced at $25, $15 and $10. Group rates will be offered. The seating capacity will be 7,000.
The South Texas Food Bank honors Laredoan Arturo N. Benavides Sr., prominent rancher, businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, for his dedication to fighting hunger in South Texas, specifically his support of the Kid’s Café program. Benavides, son of the late Anita and Carlos Y. Benavides Sr., helped start three Kids’ Cafés — at the Benavides Boys and Girls Club, Rio Bravo and El Cenizo.
Two of the Kid’s Café proudly bear the name of his grandchildren — John Roman Galo and Zoe Zelin Benavides Kid’s Cafes.
An active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, graduated from St.
Joseph’s Academy in Laredo and attended Fordham University and the University of Dallas. He proudly served in the Texas National Guard. He established the Pescadito Cattle Company where he raised commercial Brangus cattle. He later founded the ANB Cattle Company, which today has grown to multiple partnerships and corporations that include ranching, hunting, commercial real estate, land development, hotels and oil and gas ventures.
“Mr. Benavides is a true champion against hunger in his native South Texas,” food bank executive director Castillo said. “We are blessed to have him as one of our top donors. The recognition is well-deserved. We tip our hat to Arturo N. Benavides Sr.”
This Friday Second Sun @ F-Ultra Lounge

Boxers Entertainment Presents “Second Sun” this Friday May 22 @ F-Ultra Lounge Doors Open at 10pm!! Let the Summer Fun begin Miami style!!
Second Sun has become one of the biggest live dance acts in the world. The Montreal-born Antoine and Adam were first discovered by superstar DJ Paul Van Dyk when he was handed a copy of their first track “Empire” at legendary club Twilo in New York. Not only did the German DJ sign them to his label Vandit, but also collaborated with the duo on the single “Crush” from his “Reflections” album. The chart topping single became a trance anthem, the album earned a Grammy nomination and after more hugely popular singles with Vandit, Second Sun’s reputation as a quality dance act was already proven.
It was in 2006 that Second Sun started making waves in the house scene. After their remix of Queen’s “Another one Bites the Dust” became one of the biggest tracks of 2006’s Winter Music Conference, the remix requests came pouring in from artists like Sander Kleinenberg & The Shapeshifters and labels like Ministry of Sound, Toolroom, and Ultra Records. Another important remix was for Sharam’s massive hit “PARTY ALL THE TIME”, which also featured Antoine’s vocals. In 2008, even the rock world came in with remix requests, notably the internationnally renowned band 30 Seconds to Mars for their single «A Beautiful Lie» (Virgin/EMI).
That’s just on the production tip. Second Sun is also a live act that can destroy any club or festival stage. They do it every weekend playing shows all over North & South America and Europe. And having played festivals like Global Gathering (UK), Ultra Music Festival (US), Gatecrasher Summer Soundsystem (UK), Planet Love (Ireland), the South American Music Conference (Argentina & Ecuador), Nocturnal Wonderland (US), the Summer Dance Festival (Colombia), HMF (Brazil) and Bal en Blanc (Canada), Antoine and Adam thrive in front of giant crowds that have reached the 30 000 mark. They’ve also rocked the world’s leading clubs in cities like New York, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Toronto, Buenos Aires, Miami, Mexico City, Chicago, Sao Paulo and countless others. Even less obvious countries from El Salvador to Lithuania have been graced with the Second Sun sound.
“We’re trying to bring a certain element of showmanship back to dance music. We’re not Djs, we’re live musical performers. Since we come from a rock band backround, we’ve always wanted to bring a rock-show-like feel to dance music” says the classically-trained frontman Antoine.
New year – new music! The new single «Golden» just came out on Ultra Records and is sure to make waves. With it’s latin guitar hook, partytime techno beat and even a rap in the radio edit, it’s easy to hear how Second Sun blended all these musical influences that surround them in their home town of Miami to create this truly unique dancefloor destroyer!
