Visit the Imaginarium’s giant sandbox and dig in! This 4th of July weekend, the Imaginarium of South Texas will host its second annual SANDtastico! family event. Join us as we welcome back Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga, internationally recognized sand sculpture artist, as well as welcome the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center. We have a variety of activities planned for the entire weekend – sure to entertain the whole family!

Beginning on Friday at 1pm, Lucinda Wierenga will begin her sand sculpture demo in the front window space of the Imaginarium and at 4pm, the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center will introduce museum patrons to Laredo wildlife. Saturday, July 4th, will be an all-day indoor beach party at the Imaginarium with a variety of sandy activities, free sand sculpture lessons, and limbo! Sunday will close the event, with more free sand lessons from Lucinda Wierenga, as well as a special “You Art What You Eat” program at 4pm where kids can make their own ice cream.

The Imaginarium’s fundraiser will also return this year with the Sand Sculpture Competition on July 4th from 10am to 4pm (judging starts at 3pm).  The competition is open to everyone, and will have teams of four create unique sand sculptures to compete for trophies and prizes. The registration fee is $88 per team with all proceeds benefiting the Imaginarium of South Texas. Lucinda Wierenga will be on hand to offer a few tips and tricks to all participating teams. We are happy to announce that Mayor Raul Salinas will participate as part of our honored judges panel for the competition.

The Imaginarium of South Texas is an informal science center and children’s museum dedicated to providing creative learning experiences in an environment rich with hands-on exhibits and inquiry-based programming. The Imaginarium is located in Mall del Norte, next to Dillard’s, and is open seven days a week during the summer to the public.
