Area Youth Win Honors In Jr.NBA/Jr.WNBA Skills Challenge

On Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, local youngsters between the ages of 9 and 14 had the opportunity to participate in the Jr.NBA/Jr.WNBA Skills Challenge. This grassroots program provides boys and girls, competing separately, a free opportunity to showcase their excellence in the core basketball skills of shooting, dribbling, and passing. The Skills Challenge is also intended to encourage youth participation in sport while promoting sportsmanship.
Over 40 participants competed in the Jr.NBA/Jr.WNBA Skills Challenge, hosted by the City of Laredo Parks & Leisure Services Department on January 10, 2009.
The following participants won 1st place honors in their respective age and gender groups:

City of Laredo Aggressively Pursues Stimulus Funds

In an effort to stimulate the economy and create jobs, the City of Laredo, in coordination with Congressman Henry Cuellar and Senators Hutchison and Cornyn, is working hard to be one of the first communities rewarded stimulus package dollars. The City was one of the first cities in the country to provide plans on municipal infrastructure development in response to President-elect Barack Obama’s request for such information. Blanketing the Community with Love

The City of Laredo Commission for Women have been busy collecting blankets for the elderly. This is the first time the Commission has undertaken this event and both these ladies have been out in the community collecting donations. The giveaway of blankets will take place during a Posada at the nursing home, where the Commission will also give out punch and cookies to the elderly.
“At Christmas time, it is important that we remember our elderly citizens and we thought that the blankets would be a wonderful extension of the council members’ love and true warmth for our ancianitos,” said Rodriguez.
On Friday, December 19, 2008 the Young Women’s Commission made up of junior and senior girls from the local high schools will meet at the Nonprofit Management and Volunteer Center at 9:00 a.m. to wrap these blankets. The NMV Center is located at 1301 Farragut, 2nd Floor of the Transit Center. They too will be at Retama West Nursing Home on Saturday, December 20 at 2pm helping with the giveaway of blankets, punch and cookies.
